Scope

The following terms of use describe the conditions for using the ELBUS service for academic purposes (in particular for documenting the planning, execution and evaluation of scientific experiments or similar scientific projects). The ELBUS service provides a web-based electronic laboratory notebook, and is offered under the following domains:

Requirements

To use the ELBUS service, you need an active user account at the University of Stuttgart. This account allows authentication via Shibboleth. The ID, name and email address of the institutional account are used to create an ELBUS account. Users are solely responsible for the activities that take place on their respective accounts.

Fees

The use of the ELBUS service is free of charge. The operators reserve the right to charge fees if the resources provided are used to a considerable extent. There is no legal right to registration and use.

Obligations of the users

The use of the ELBUS service is limited to academic purposes. The user may not take any action or use any software that could disrupt the functioning of the ELBUS service or otherwise impair its availability. No personal data or otherwise sensitive data according to Art. 9 and Art. 10 GDPR should be stored without additional protective measures according to the GDPR.

Users are obliged to treat their access data confidentially and to protect it from access by third parties. In the event of possible misuse of access data, the local administrator must be informed immediately. Users are responsible for the consequences of misuse of their access data.

In addition, the user must always observe and comply with the information provided by the operator.

In the event of a violation by the user, the user's access authorization can be blocked. In particular, access to the service can be blocked due to excessive use or other types of misuse.

Rights of the operator

The service operators reserve the right to define quotas when allocating resources.

Administrators of the ELBUS service may view the data and work stored by the user if:

  • there is reasonable suspicion of a violation of the terms of use or
  • if this is necessary to solve support requests and the user has not released the data within two weeks after being informed.

Account lifecycle

In principle, the lifespan of accounts is unlimited. The operators can archive accounts, whereby the user loses access to ELBUS, but the associated data is retained and stored in ELBUS for at least 10 years in accordance with the retention obligation under the GWP (or other applicable legal provisions).

Data protection

When registering, the following information is transmitted and stored in a database of the ELBUS service:

The e-mail address can be used to contact users regarding the service.

Detailed information can be found in the privacy policy.

No warranties

The ELBUS service is provided as seen and as available without any express or implied warranties. In particular, there is no guarantee that:

  • the service will be secure or available at any particular time or location;
  • the results of using the service will meet your requirements;
  • alternative communication channels will be sought if the e-mail address stored in the database is invalid.

Use of the service is entirely at your own risk.
