Research software is usually based on existing software or libraries that are already subject to their own licence. Finding a software licence that is compatible with all dependencies and also meets the user's own requirements for the permitted use of the research software is therefore no easy task.
The License Checker helps to select a suitable open-source licence for research software. For existing software, the tool identifies which licences are already included and suggests compatible licences based on a licence ontology. It also provides an overview of common open-source licences and their compatibility with each other.
